Questions of Faith - Obama and McCain
I watched the forum last night. I really liked the questions that were asked. I think questions about faith and religion should be asked.
I do believe that Obama seemed less confident than I have ever seen him. I know that Obama's answers were not necessarily in agreement with many people in the audience. He also did not have any cut and dry answers. To me he is obviously a man who thinks things through, understands the complexities and consequences of the decisions he is going to have to make, and knows that not all of America will agree on these tough issues.
Last night McCain did great! He was confident and strong and clear with his answers. He was engaging, likable, and at times funny. But some of his answers cut me to the core.
I like McCain. I voted for him in the primary 9 years ago. I would have voted for him 8 years ago. If he wins this year I will be ok with it...I think...at least we will get the evil, corrupt, chimp out of the white house.
So my desire to see a major change in our government has me just counting down to whatever change that might be. But last night I realized if it is McCain coming into office, I will need and want to be much more diligent in protecting the rights to make personal choices, whether it is pro-choice or gay marriage. Any person who can have such a clear and strong stand about the personal decisions other people have to make is someone we have to be diligent against.
This is why I liked Obama. He knows that his values are not the values of the country and he has to balance what he believes with the values of this country. Not the popular vote of values such as more people believe one way or another, but the values of choice and freedom. These are not values that we have lived up to in this country yet, but they are the values that we continuously strive for and have made many strides toward living in such a way.
Overall I think that McCain was a great image last night, but his substance scares me a little. Not as much as I have been the past 8 years.
